This competition is open to all current holders of a Compulsory Basic Training Certificate, or anyone prepared to have attained this standard by 31st March 2008. (This certificate can be attained by contacting GMTS and booking the necessary course, which will last between 1 and 2 days, and cost £105.) Candidates must also be over the age of 21. Please see our Rules & Regulations.

There are three stages to the contest:

  • Stage 1 - All eligible applicants must apply online by tackling our online questionnaire and then completing our Bikesafe competition tie-breaker. The questions are drawn from typical DSA Theory tests, and the deadline for completion is March 31st 2008. 20 candidates will proceed to the next stage of the contest.

  • Stage 2 - The candidates selected to proceed from Stage 1 have been invited to John Clark Tayside on Sunday 18th May,to complete a written and practical assessmentThe highest scoring finalists will be invited to Stage 3 of the contest, to be held at Knockhill Racing Circuit in Fife.

  • Stage 3 - The Finalists will be invited to Knockhill for the final elimination round in July. The judging panel will comprise: Isle of Man TT Winner- Ian Duffus; Director of Training for GMTS- Doug Barker; John Clark Motorrad Manager - Alan Dalziel and Institute of Advanced Motorists representative - Rennie Ritchie.

The top 2 will go forward to complete their full Direct Access Bike Certification courtesy of John Clark Tayside, the Dundee Evening Telegraph and GMTS Rider Training. The most proficient of these two winners will then be presented with a superb BMW G650 X Moto at an Awards Ceremony at John Clark Tayside with full press attendance and publicity.

So, if you’re lucky enough to make it to Stage 2, here’s what you can expect…

The ‘written’ assessment will be a computer based examination, very similar to the current DSA Theory test. It will consist of 35 questions and a number of video clips to test you knowledge of the Highway Code and hazard perception.

This will then be followed by a 20 minute assessment ride on a 125cc motorcycle which will look closely at the skills required to pass the CBT, (Compulsory Basic Training Certificate).

Here, the main aim is to see how well the final 4 convert their skills learned riding a 125cc motorcycle to something a bit bigger. Once this has been completed, each will then show their ability on the track, not to race, but to demonstrate how they handle a much more powerful machine under the watchful eye of a very experienced motorcycle racer.

Two participants will be successful, and will then be trained to test standard by GMTS Ltd. - one of Scotland’s leading motorcycle training schools.

The overall winner will be decided based on their ability to have passed the DSA test and on a points system scored during all of the previous stages – demonstrating that they deserve to win a new a BMW G650 X Moto (courtesy of John Clark Tayside) and hold the title “Scottish New Motorcycle Rider of the Year 2008”.
