Our top tips for greener driving

Miles per gallon – our top 10 tips to greener driving

With petrol prices rising by the week, driving in a more fuel efficient and therefore environmentally friendly way makes more sense now than ever before.  Here are a few tips that can save your fuel consumption:

  1. off-load as much weight as possible, e.g., remove roof racks and excess items from the boot
  2. turn down the air conditioning which can push your fuel consumption up by as much as 11%
  3. keep the windows wound up – driving with open windows pushes fuel consumption up by around 3%
  4. keep to the 70 mph speed limit on the motorway as increasing your speed to 85 mph can drive up your fuel consumption by around 22%
  5. drive smoothly and don’t tailgate, as well as being dangerous it places more strain on the engine and uses up more fuel
  6. check out your route before setting off on your journey – satellite navigation systems and even Google maps help here
  7. share a lift with others, especially work colleagues travelling in the same direction
  8. drive the smallest car you can
  9. drive a new car where possible
  10. convert your car to an alternative fuel source or Lower Petroleum Gasoline LPG

New cars and smaller engines are the best combination when stretching the miles per gallon you can expect from your car, especially in the city when it's hardest to drive efficiently. Again, the message is that you don’t always have to run your engine on alternative fuel types to be green.
