The MINI Countryman puts the manufacturer’s classic design on an SUV platform, combining the renowned maneuverability and dynamism of MINI models with the ride height, road presence and interior space of the best 4x4s. A selection of capable and efficient engines, along with a cabin boasting a multitude of advanced driver-convenience equipment and safety measures, make the Countryman a superb option for active families wanting the best of all worlds.
An attractive and distinctive cabin sets the Countryman decisively apart from the plethora of conservatively-styled SUVs on the market. Once drivers enter the vehicle, they are faced by large, circular mountings for the instruments and onboard computer, which display their information in a clear and direct manner. One convenient feature is the central rail behind the gear lever, which allows objects to be passed back and forth between the front and rear seats.
The appealing and quirky approach of the interior design, however, would count for nothing if the cabin was uncomfortable or cramped. Fortunately, this is emphatically not the case – even five full-size adults are favoured with a great deal of headroom and legroom, and can relax on high-quality and supportive seats of cloth, cloth/leather, or leatherette/leather. Luggage capacity with all the seats in place, meanwhile, stands at 350 litres – and can be extended to a capacious 1170 litres with the rear seats folded forward.
Whilst retaining the same characteristic looks that have made every MINI since 1959 instantly recognisable throughout the world, the Countryman necessarily has a more upright stance than its smaller counterparts. The intricate detailing of the headlights also ensures that the vehicle stands out on the road, as does the “floating” roof. Side sills and chrome door handles round off the sophisticated look, with the large front and rear bumpers and roof rack hinting at a more rugged edge.
The Countryman comes with a range of three petrol and three diesel engines. The most powerful of the petrol engines, the 190hp version available on the Cooper S specification, can propel the vehicle to speeds of up to 135mph and acceleration from 0-62mph in just 7.5 seconds. The three diesel engines all offer superb fuel economy and low CO2 emissions – especially the 90hp unit of the One D edition, which returns combined consumption of 67.3mpg and carbon output as low as 111g/km – meaning that you pay just £30 of Vehicle Excise Duty a year.
