Am I Eligible for the Motability Scheme?

The Motability Scheme is an excellent opportunity for those looking to ensure their independence and access to transportation easily and in a cost-effective way. It allows you to use some of your disability benefits to pay for a Motability vehicle, if you receive certain allowances.

What Allowance Can I Use?

In order to use your allowance for a car on the Motability scheme you need to receive one of the following qualifying benefit options and have at least 12 months of the current allowance remaining:

Department of Work and Pensions:

  • Higher Rate Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA)

Social Security Scotland:

  • Higher Rate Mobility Component of Child Disability Payment
  • Enhanced Rate Mobility Component of Adult Disability Payment

Veterans UK:

  • Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)
  • War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement (WPMS)

Please be aware that if you receive Attendance Allowance it does not qualify for the scheme, and only the higher/enhanced rate of the Mobility Allowance can be used for the mobility scheme.

Who is Eligible to Drive My Motability Car?

There can be up to three drivers insured on your Motability Scheme vehicle and these can be changed at any time. They must all hold a UK or EU driving licence, acknowledge a declaration to have their licence checked, and agree to stick to the Motability Scheme guidelines.

If your drivers don't live at the same address as the disabled person or the disabled person lives in a care home, Motability may fit a location tracker to the vehicle. This is just to make sure that the disabled person is benefitting from the car and they will always make you aware if this is a requirement for your vehicle.

Drivers under 25 are only able to drive petrol, diesel, or hybrid cars with an ABI Insurance Group of 16 or lower and a power output of 120 brake horsepower (BHP) or less. If you choose an electric car it must be in ABI Insurance Group of 21 or lower and 140 BHP or less. You can also only have one driver insured who is under the age of 21.

Please also bear in mind that if you have a driving-related conviction, disqualification or endorsement, you may not be eligible for the scheme.
