Efficient urban driving has come a long way in recent years, making slow and steady progress towards a sustainable future. BMW, however, aims to spark a revolution in city car manufacture, and leading the charge is the new BMW i3. This revolutionary vehicle's electric powertrain means that it is the company's very first zero-emissions car, and is currently listed as the Environmental Protection Agency's most fuel-efficient vehicle of any type. Not only that, but with its assured performance, advanced technology and futuristic looks, the i3 is the ideal city car for almost any situation.
Inside, the i3 makes the most of the space available with ingenious ergonomics, which ensure the instrumentation and controls are optimally placed. Dubbed 'LifeDrive architecture' the overall design philosophy is forward-looking and innovative.
The unmistakeable front end of the i3 provides a new spin on a classic formula, with the iconic kidney grille finding a new home in a slightly elevated position. Short overhangs at the front and rear ensure easy parking on busy streets, while a large opening at the boot ensures a high degree of practicality.
The eDrive power system of the i3 truly represents the next step in electric driving, offering zero emissions. Utilising a lithium-ion battery in conjunction with an electric motor, the vehicle outputs a highly impressive 170bhp with up to 250Nm of torque – enough for any urban requirements. What's more, the battery can be recharged to 80 percent capacity in under six hours.
