CO2 Emissions Levels
With CO2 being the most important greenhouse gas contributing to climate change, the government has tried to encourage motorists to buy new and used cars with lower CO2 emission ratings since 2001.
At first they extended the lower rate of Road Tax (Vehicle Excise Duty [VED]) to cars with an engine size of 1549cc or less, a year later they introduced a company car tax banding based on CO2 emissions, and in 2006 introduced a zero rate of tax for cars with the lowest CO2 emissions and a new higher rate of tax for the worst polluters. At present CO2 emissions are graduated into the following Tax Bands (as of 21st Octobet 2011)
