The BMW i3 is the German marque’s first true all-electric-capable vehicle, and has been described by Top Gear as “the best small premium EV you can buy.” High praise indeed. This distinctively styled and upmarket car comes very well equipped – and is a lot quicker than you might expect.
The lack of a pillar between front and rear doors ensures that access for travellers in both compartments is easy. The four-seat i3 provides front-row travellers with heated positions and plenty of adjustment options, and the driver also benefits from a rake-and-reach-adjustable steering wheel. A 260-litre luggage compartment gives way to a 1,110-litre cargo when rear seats are dropped, which is substantially more than is offered by, say, the KIA Soul EV. The rear seats fold flat too, while a low load lip makes placement and retrieval of items as simple as possible.
A four-speaker sound system is included as standard, featuring DAB digital radio and an AM/FM tuner. Thanks to the inclusion of Bluetooth connectivity, audio streaming and hands-free telephone communication are possible. A 10.3-inch BMW Navigation system is installed too, offering 3D mapping and real-time traffic information, which make the planning – and tweaking – of each journey an intuitive endeavour.
The i3 is packed with numerous driver aids and passive protective features. Included are Electronic Stability Control, Cruise Control, automatic rain-sensing headlights, six airbags and a seatbelt reminder – and ISOFIX preparation for safely securing younger passengers.
There’s a lot to admire about the way this BMW electric car looks. For example, the classic BMW kidney grille is present and correct, and comprises a highly polished black centre with eye-catching blue trim highlights. The BMW i3 impressively fuses striking design and functionality. For instance, this attractively futuristic car rides on 19-inch star-spoke alloy wheels that not only draw attention to them, but are super-lightweight in order to deliver enhanced efficiency. Other features include green-tinted windows that provide welcome respite from intense sunshine, and a black-finished rear spoiler that is fitted with a third brake light.
This BMW hybrid car’s eDrive motor produces 170bhp and 250Nm of torque, enabling impressive acceleration: 0-60mph in approximately seven seconds. The vehicle is capable of a top speed of 93mph too. More importantly, in EV mode, the i3 produces no CO2 emissions whatsoever – and there’s no need to queue up at the petrol station.
Using a domestic power source, charging time is completed in as little as 12 hours. The vehicle features DC Rapid Charge preparation, which means that it can be charged at one of several thousand stations around the country in just 40 minutes. Upon a full charge, the i3 has a range of up to 124 miles. With Range Extender, this figure increases by up to 93 miles, and sees the vehicle return as much as 470.8mpg, while producing emissions as low as 12g/km.
