May was another busy and successful month for the Alba Development Road Team.
Saturday 13th May saw Sophie and Amelia take on the Lincoln GP which lived up to its reputation and highlighted the strength of women’s cycling in the UK. It was a tough race and saw a group of five riders break away and open up a gap with just three laps to go. Sophie unfortunately missed the move and found herself isolated in the chase after an almost perfect ride where she covered everything on her own. She finished in 16th place after a great ride whilst Amelia also had a good day riding and finished in 29th.
On the same day across the border at Caird Park Velodrome in Dundee, Evie was crowned Scottish Women’s Omnium Champion with a dominant performance that saw her win three out her four events.
The following weekend, 20th-21st May, saw only two of the riders in action; Amelia and Arianne. Amelia took second place in the British Universities & Colleges Sport Road Race whilst representing Edinburgh University and Arianne finished third in the second Scottish Scotia Women’s Series race at Rosneath.
The final weekend of the month had a large part of the team back in Belgium at the GP Mazda Schelkens delivering a really strong performance. The field of competition included WWT and was a fast race on a very flat course which resulted in a bunch sprint finish. Amongst the bunch were Sophie, Arianne, and Amelia whilst Beth, Daisy, and Vicky were not able to finish. All of the team gained valuable experience racing at this level.
Meanwhile, back in the UK, Evie was out on the roads of Yorkshire racing in the second round of the Women’s Junior National Series. It was a challenging course, the opposite of the flatlands of Belgium, and an overall exciting race. Evie finished 16th from a much-reduced bunch chasing the race-winning break of four riders.
We can’t wait to see what June brings for the team!
