After initially earning six points from Alonso finishing in 7th place, a protest from Haas against his car saw him drop to 15th place with a 30 second post-race penalty and move Ocon up to 10th to see the team finish the US Grand Prix with 1 point, keeping them in fourth place of the Constructor Standings.
The incident that saw Alonso’s points contested came on lap 22 when he collided with Lance Stroll of Aston martin. He made contact with the other car when overtaking on a straight which caused damage to his right-hand mirror and it later detached. After a trip to the pits he recovered to take 7th place in the final standings.
Speaking about the incident he said “It was scary in the car, because when you are up in the air, anything can happen. When I saw that I landed on the track, I said, ‘Okay, I will retire the car now and that’s it for today.’ But no, change tyres, front wing – go!”
Speaking on the penalty, the team has said that they are disappointed but will be protested due to the car being deemed safe by both FIA and the FIA technical delegate and the original protest being lodged 24 minutes after the deadline.
Ocon began in the Pit Lane after having to add new power unit components under Parc Ferme conditions and had a less dramatic race. He adopted a two-stop Hard-hard-Medium strategy which brought him into 11th place, although he was moved into 10th after Alonso’ penalty.
The team now looks forward to the Mexican Grand Prix this weekend.
