The New BMW R 1300 GS

BMW Motorrad established a new segment of touring enduros more than four decades ago with the launch of the R 80 G/S and the BMW GS with boxer engine has been the undisputed leader of the competitive field ever since. AS they launch the new R 1300 GS, BMW Motorrad has opted for an almost completely new design, with an impressive weight saving of nearly 12kg, to retain their place at the front of the pack.

“With the new BMW R 1300 GS we will once again take the competition by surprise. It is defined by an even broader spread of product substance, while the reduction in complexity and vehicle weight, combined with focused equipment, enable the essence of the boxer GS to be showcased even more strikingly. With a new engine, outstanding handling, and impressive ride qualities, it will set the pace both on and off the road,” Thilo Fuchs, Head of Water-cooled Boxer Models.

The new design of the two-cylinder boxer engine is more compact than previous versions as the gearbox is now located under the engine alongside a new camshaft drive arrangement. At 1300cc it produces 145hp at 7750rpm and develops a maximum torque of 149Nm at 6500rpm, making it the most powerful BMW boxer engine ever to be produced in series.

The new suspension has a sheet metal main frame made from steel which is significantly optimised in terms of installation space but also offers higher levels of stiffness than the previous model. The rear frame has replaced the previous tubular steel structure with a die-cast aluminium construction whilst the new EVO Telelever front wheel guide with flex element and revised EVO Paralever rear wheel guide provide even greater steering precision and ride stability.

Four riding modes are now standard: Rain, Road, Eco, and Enduro. This adds an additional mode compared to the predecessor model and allows you to adapt your ride to your individual preferences. Also included as standard is a new, small LED headlamp with a distinctive light icon which always illuminates the road with unrivalled clarity for better visibility. The light unit consists of two LED units for low and high beam along with four additional LED units for the daytime running light and the side light.

The new BMW R 1300 GS also introduces you to the new Riding Assistant option which is made up of Active Cruise Control, Front Collision Warning, and Lane Change Warning. These features assist you on the road by allowing you to set the desired riding speed and distance to the vehicle in front, helps to prevent collisions, and monitors lanes to ensure a smooth and safe lane change.
