Congratulations to the Ecurie Ecosse team on their victory in the Avon Tyres British GT Championship this past weekend at Oulton Park.
They gave themselves an excellent chance of victory when Alexander Sims secured pole position in qualifiying by 0.3seconds. Co-driver Marco Attard was able to maintain 3rd position over the first 10 laps of Monday's opening one hour race before suffering an unfortunate & rare gearbox failure, which forced the team into an early retirement.
Gearbox problems fixed going into the day's second race, Sims managed to maintain a small advantage over the chasing cars early on but the appearance of the safety car after 12 laps & some other unfortunate problems almost scuppered the team's chances of winning.
The mandatory driver change is only allowed after 25 minutes of the race, which meant Sims and the other leading cars were penalised when the pit window opened just as they were coming round to finish another lap, while the competitors further back could drop into the pit lane and make their stops under Safety Car conditions. That unfortunately meant Marco could only rejoin the race in 3rd position, having switched with Sims a lap later.
However, the two leading cars collided with each other later on in the race & Attard managed to regain the lead following the race restart and keep that position right to the end, securing Ecurie Ecosse's first win of the season.
Mark Lemmer, Barwell Motorsport Team Principal said: “The results we have achieved this week are superb and testimony to the hard work and dedication put in by everyone concerned. The pole position and win in British GT has been made even more satisfying by the fact we outperformed the factory entries from Aston Martin, Bentley and Nissan!“
The 25 points gained in the 2nd race means Attard & Sims sit in 4th place in the Drivers standings ahead of the double points paying Rockingham round on May 4th/5th.
