In introducing a hybrid drivetrain to its iconic and universally loved 3 Series, BMW insisted that the iPerformance version should deliver all of the advantages of an EV without compromising the driver experience.
From the outside, the only tell-tale signs that this is a hybrid model are the small 'e-drive' badging and the charge port door by the front passenger wheel-well. Inside 3 Series Saloon iPerformance, it’s business as usual, with the only addition being a driver display for the car's hybrid functions. So drivers of the regular fuel vehicles will feel instantly at home.
While BMW have gone to great lengths to keep the hybrid systems from dominating the design language, under the skin it’s a different story. In order to maintain their reputation for superior handling characteristics, BMW has ensured that the iPerformance variant maintains a near-perfect 50:50 weight distribution.
The 184bhp four-cylinder 2.0-litre petrol engine is mated to an 87bhp electric motor powered by a 7.7kWh battery, and delivers an impressive 0-62mph time of 6.1 seconds. That’s almost the same performance figures as a conventional combustion engine, with the added bonus of being able to cover up to 25miles on electric power alone and achieve excellent economy and emissions figures. As a result, the 3 Series iPerformance is perfect for company car buyers looking to keep costs to a minimum.
The iPerformance adds features designed to help you get the most out of the hybrid system. A display in the main instrument cluster shows battery charge/recharge cycles, while a small button marked 'eDrive' allows you to switch between drive modes. This gives drivers the ability to prioritise performance, balance the two systems, or drive on battery power alone.
