Offering a zero-emissions, sustainably-constructed urban scooter that also delivers agile handling and thrilling power is no small feat. It is, however, exactly what BMW has achieved with its fully electric Maxi-Scooter.
The design language of this model is very much in keeping with other BMW “i” hybrid and electric vehicles. Dynamic creases and acute angles provide striking kerb appeal, with only unique badging and the lack of an exhaust to give the game away. The driving position is comfortable with ergonomic controls providing easy operation, and lightweight materials like aluminium have been used to keep the overall weight and centre of gravity low, for increased agility and energy efficiency.
Power is delivered to the maxi-Scooter C Evolution by the fully-electric, liquid-cooled motor that develops 48bhp – a higher figure than most combustion engine-driven maxi-scooters. Without the need for gears, power is also available instantly. The model’s range, meanwhile, is a very respectable 99 miles, thanks to eight of the very latest lithium-ion batteries, and makes this the perfect option for those with a short commute. A full recharge takes approximately four hours and should cost less than £2.
As with all BMW electric vehicles, the Maxi-Scooter C Evolution offers riders a choice between different driving modes. A switch on the right handlebar allows you to select modes that prioritise either energy conservation, performance or a balance of the two. 'Sail' mode for example, reduces engine braking allowing the C Evolution to coast for longer distances.
Other on-board technology includes a 12V socket for device charging and Torque Control Assist for optimum stability in a range of conditions.
