THERE ARE A NUMBER OF AUTO MAINTENANCE JOBS AND SAFETY CHECKS WE ADVISE YOU FOLLOW TO ENSURE SAFE WINTER DRIVING:

BATTERY AND ELECTRICS

Battery is the most common cause of winter breakdowns. A battery that is more than five years old may struggle in the cold - so we advise to get this checked to save the inconvenience of unplanned failure. To save your battery turn off any non-essential electrical loads, avoid running any electrical systems any longer than necessary and finally use the starter in short five second bursts if the engine doesn't start quickly, leaving thirty seconds between attempts to allow the battery to recover.

ANTIFREEZE

Top up engine coolant with antifreeze, you will need a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water. Check coolant level regularly. Antifreeze costs only a little, but a frozen engine will be very costly to repair.

VISION

Make sure your vision is not obscured in any way, either though dirt or snow. Make sure you clear the snow from your windows as well to ensure that this will not fall onto your windscreen whilst driving and obscure your view.

VISIBILITY

Make sure all bulbs are working correctly and our advise would be to carry spare bulbs to ensure you can always be seen clearly. You will need to always use headlights when visibility is reduced.

TYRES

When the temperature drops standard tyres stiffen. They become harder and less elastic, and this reduces their performance on the road. Your car's handling might become less precise, and if you need to brake suddenly you could find yourself in trouble, as stopping distances are increased. We recommend at least 3mm of tread for winter motoring. Consider changing your tyres to winter tyres- Fitting winter tyres is the tried, tested and approved option to boost your car's safety in the colder months.

PLAN BEFORE YOU GO

Prepare your car and journey at least ten minutes prior to your driving to ensure all you have time to clear all windows using a scraper and de-icer. It would also be a good idea to plan your journey and the roads you are going to take, preferably use major roads that will have been well-gritted.
