Motorsport has always been in MINI’s DNA, but the story roots back to 1946 when Cooper Charles has his son, John founded the Cooper Car Company and built their first racing cars in England, in a small garage in Surbiton in South West London. The history of MINI Cooper has been one that has seen the model rise from a racing car through to one of the most iconic vehicles of the 1960’s. Changing the course of motorsport forever the Cooper Car Company first built single seat Formula 3 racing cars, with revolutionary rear engine, John Cooper went on to successfully win the Formula 1 World Championship and the Constructors Championship. At the height of the racing fame, the MINI Cooper was born.
After considerable triumph and victory in racing in the 60’s, a powerful engine was added, as well as new brakes and sharper steering, John transformed a little family car to a champion racer that took the car industry by storm. Additional power was added, disc brakes fitted after the success of the Monte Carlo Rally and now nothing was holding MINI back. The MINI Cooper was made available to the public and the brand experienced global success and won competitions for years to come. The hatch was the perfect car for any age.
Cooper, Cooper S and Cooper D badges have graced every version of the new MINI since the brands revival but the fastest and sportiest model of all is the John Cooper Works. 2019 marks 60 years since the start of the MINI journey, celebrating distinctive design, jaw-dropping driving experience and iconic wings.
