Now in its seventh generation, the Volkswagen Golf is one of the finest vehicles in its class available today. In fact, Auto Express has the Golf positioned at number one on its list of top ten hatchbacks.
The Golf offers five-door practicality, and a roomy interior that accommodates full-size adults in both compartments, and is perfect for a family of five.A 380-litre boot space, which is bigger than is offered by either the Ford Focus or Vauxhall Astra, quickly expands to a very useful 1,270 litres with rear seats folded.
As well as standard features such as power-operated front windows and air conditioning, this sporty hatchback is installed with an eight-speaker sound system. Bluetooth connectivity is included too, facilitating music streaming and hands-free telephone communication. A Discover Navigation touchscreen system is optional with entry-level S trim lines, and standard with SE grades and higher.
As you would expect from a car such as this, the VW Golf comes with Euro NCAP’s maximum five-star crash test rating and a slew of driver aids and protective features. Included are Anti-lock Braking System and Electronic Stability Control, which help to significantly reduce the risk of skidding. Also featured is Automatic Post-Collision Braking System, which works in conjunction with the car’s airbag sensors by swiftly applying braking pressure in the event of vehicular impact.
There are many very good reasons why the Golf has been gracing streets all over the world since the mid-1970s. For one thing, this popular car looks good – even more so in its current iteration, which features a newly fashioned bumper and super-sleek headlights. The vehicle boasts a number of body-coloured fixtures too, such as door handles and door mirrors, which perfectly complement your paint finish of choice. Furthermore, SE trims and above are fitted with minimum-size 16-inch alloy wheels as standard. All models benefit from LED light technology, including daytime running lights and tail lights that deliver greater illumination than their halogen counterparts.
A standard-issue 1.0-litre 85bhp petrol engine manages up to 58.9mpg and produces CO2 emissions from just 108g/km, making this hatchback very affordable to run – and environmentally friendly too. For pulse-quickening thrills, try Volkswagen’s performance Golf variants: VW Golf GTI, VW Golf GTI Performance or VW Golf R. The latter, for instance, is powered by a 2.0-litre 306bhp petrol engine that enables the car to proceed from 0-60mph in approximately 4.4 seconds.
