Motability Scheme Explained

What is Motability?

The Motability scheme is a government-funded initiative designed to afford disabled people and their families a better, more cost-efficient mode of transport. With over three and a half million vehicles supplied to people all over the country since the programme's creation in 1978, it's been incredibly successful at achieving this.

The Motability Scheme is suitable for a wide range of different people. The scheme offers brand new cars, wheelchair accessible vehicles (WAVs), or a scooter or powered wheelchair, allowing you to choose a Motability vehicle that suits your needs best.

For full details about eligibility see our Am I Eligible page but you need to receive one of the following qualifying mobility allowance payments:

Department of Work and Pensions:

  • Higher Rate Mobility Part of Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • Higher Rate Mobility Part of Disability Living Allowance (DLA)

Social Security Scotland:

  • Higher Rate Mobility Component of Child Disability Payment
  • Enhanced Rate Mobility Component of Adult Disability Payment

Veterans UK:

  • Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)
  • War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement (WPMS)

You also need to have at least 12 months left on your qualifying mobility allowance in order to apply for the scheme.

Visit A Dealership

Once you know that you are eligible for the Motability scheme you can start to look for a Motability car. Your search may start online but you'll want to visit a dealership in person for more information about the car that you like, to test drive, and to make sure it's available on the Motability scheme with any adaptations you might need.

Order Your Car or Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV)

Once you have made your decision and given it a drive, where possible, you'll be ready to order your new vehicle. Our Motability specialist will discuss all the important things with you such as any advance payment needed, how much it will cost monthly, and if there any adaptations needed to make it more suitable for you.

They'll also discuss a timescale for your new car to arrive, which will take longer for some adaptations to be added, and agree a contact plan with you to keep you in the loop for your order.

Collect Your Brand New Car

Once your car arrives, the team will let you know and invite you to come and collect it at a time that is best for you and any other drivers who want to collect with you. You'll receive a full handover that will go over all controls and features of the car in as much detail as you want.
