Founded by John Madejski in 1977, Auto Trader was first
a small regional classified advertising magazine called Thames Valley Trader
and was joined by Guardian Media Group in 1983 when they considered launching a
similar publication in the north of England. The publication expanded
significantly, and in 1988, it was officially renamed Auto Trader.
The company took its first major step towards digital in 1996 with the launch
of its first website, Autotrader.co.uk, which allowed people to buy and sell a
car online with them for the very first time.
The tipping point arrived in 2007 when digital revenue matched print revenue, leading to an acceleration of the online-focused strategy. This transition culminated in June 2013, when the final print edition of Auto Trader was published, making the company a 100% digital business. Today, the company, which listed on the London Stock Exchange in 2015, stands as the UK's largest digital automotive marketplace, continuing to expand its offering through acquisitions like Autorama in 2022.
