The Range Rover Sport is a mid size luxury SUV that has been produced by Jaguar Land Rover under the Land Rover brand since 2005. It's currently in its third generation, the original concept car was the Range Stormer which was introduced at the 2004 North American International Auto Show and is now on display at the Heritage Motor Centre in Gaydon.
The latest Range Rover Sport introduces a wide range of sporty powertrain options, including a plug in hybrid for the first time, and adopts the minimal Range Rover styling seen across the range.
The Range Rover Sport presents a blend of luxury and athleticism through its "reductive" exterior design, which focuses on clean, uninterrupted surfaces and minimal detail. It maintains the instantly recognisable, imposing silhouette of a Range Rover but with a more dynamic, hunkered-down stance and a sleeker, tapering roofline that narrows the glasshouse towards the rear.
Flush door handles, which glide out when the car is unlocked, contribute to the exceptionally smooth, seamless appearance of the body sides, enhancing the visual effect of a vehicle sculpted from a solid block.
The front end is assertive, featuring slim, contemporary LED headlights that integrate cleanly with a compressed, wide grille, emphasising the vehicle's breadth. Unlike the flagship Range Rover, the Sport's lower section is generally more aggressive, often dominated by a large lower air intake and distinct side intakes to visually hint at the performance capability within.
At the rear, the design is particularly modern, featuring distinctive, horizontal LED tail lights that are often hidden until illuminated within a dark, full-width trim piece across the tailgate. This sits above a subtly chiselled lower bumper, which on performance variants, is finished with visible, integrated exhaust tailpipes and a diffuser to underscore its sporty character.
As you would expect from a spacious luxury SUV, the interior quality of the Range Rover Sport is exceptionally high, featuring a well-designed centre console . Either leather upholstery or plush fabrics such as Kvadrat and Ultrafabrics adorn the seats and cabin areas whilst soft touch finishes complete the space.
The cockpit environment of the Range Rover Sport is meticulously crafted to be both luxurious and driver-focused, continuing the reductive design philosophy from the exterior. A key feature is the modern, floating Pivi Pro infotainment display, which is seamlessly integrated into the dashboard, accompanied by a separate, high-definition digital driver display behind the steering wheel.
The overall layout is intentionally clean, minimising physical buttons to maintain an uncluttered aesthetic, with key functions managed through the central touchscreen and haptic controls on the steering wheel.
The Range Rover Sport offers plenty of room for passengers, both those in the front seats and those in the rear seats. Headroom sits at 998mm in the front adn 982mm in the back whilst legroom is estimated at 1024mm and 961mm , respectively, which means that even those tall adults over 6ft should manage to feel comfortable in any of the Range Rover Sport's seats.
The boot space is equally as impressive, with 835 litres behind the second row of seats which opens up to 1860 litres with the rear seats folded down. The boot floor is in line with the exterior part of the boot lid, making it easier to slide objects in and a powered tailgate is standard.
All Range Rover Sport models also have Easy Boot Loading which allows you to lower the tailgate by as much as 50mm by lowering the rear air suspension. This is accessible either from the key fob or a button located in the load space area.
If you are taking the Range Rover Sport off road onto challenging terrain, the wading depth is 900mm with no reduction for PHEV models which means that you can safely take any model of Range Rover Sport wherever your journey takes you.
The Range Rover Port is available with three different types of engine: diesel mild hybrid, petrol mild hybrid, and petrol plug-in hybrid. This offers a flexible selection of powertrains to suit your needs, including diesel engines, a choice increasingly rare among other car manufacturers. A fully electric version of the Range Rover model is expected within the next couple of years but is not currently available.
Mild hybrid technology combines an electric motor and battery with a traditional combustion engine to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions but unlike a plug in hybrid car it cannot run the car alone.
The D250 diesel mild hybrid engine houses a 3.0 litre, 6 cylinder diesel engine which is capable of 249PS and 600Nm of torque. It utilises all wheel drive, making it capable for every type of journey, and has a combined WLTP figure up to 39.8mpg alongside CO2 emissions up to 204g/km. Although it's the least powerful of the diesel mild hybrid engines it still offers a 0-60mph acceleration of 7.3 seconds with Dynamic launch.
The D300 diesel mild hybrid engine offers you more power for your Range Rover Sport with 300PS and 650NM of torque with the same 3.0 litre, 6 cylinder diesel engine, and all wheel drive transmission. Land Rover claims that you'll have the same WLTP combined figure up to 39.8mpg with CO2 emissions up to 204g/km. The 0-60mph time is decreased to 6.1 seconds when choosing the D300 engine.
The most powerful diesel engine is the D350 diesel mild hybrid engine. The 3.0 litre, 6 cylinder engine now gives 3550PS and 700Nm of torque and keeps the all wheel drive capability. The additional power doesn't mean a decrease in efficiency either, with Land Rover claiming almost the same WLTP combined figure as the other diesel mild hybrid engines at 39.6mpg and CO2 emissions, again, up to 204g/km. The additional power also seriously decreases the 0-60mph time again, brining it down to just 5.5 seconds.
If you're looking for more power, the petrol mild hybrid engine options offer the most power in the Range Rover Sport engine range.
The P530 petrol mild hybrid model uses a 4.4 litre, 8-cylinder, twin turbocharged V8 engine to deliver 530PS with 750Nm or torque. As you'd expect, this means that it's also much faster than the diesel mild hybrids and can reach 0-60mph in just 4.3 seconds although it comes at the cost of your fuel efficiency, which drops the WLPT combined figure to up to 25.2mpg.
The most powerful engine in the entire Range Rover Sport range is the P635 Petrol mild hybrid. Utilising the same 4.4 litre, 8-cylinder, twin turbocharged V8 engine as the P530, the P635 delivers an astonishing 635PS and 750Nm of torque.
This reduces the 0-60mph time even further to just 3.6 seconds, making it as quick to accelerate as many smaller bodied cars, with the combined WLTP figure up to 24.1mpg. The estimated CO2 emissions are higher due to the higher power output, coming in at up to 265g/km.
A plug-in hybrid car uses a larger battery alongside a traditional combustion engine to power your car and as a result can run a short distance on electric only power. This is usually enough for a daily commute based on figures surrounding average commuting distances in the UK and improves fuel efficiency and economy significantly compared to four wheel drive cars with no electric support.
As the name suggests, the car needs to be plugged in to charge the battery but you also continue to use petrol as your primary fuel. However, the battery also receives charge from regenerative braking, where kinetic energy is captured when the car slows down, and the combustion engine can also act as a generator to maintain charge while driving.
Crucially, once the dedicated electric-only range is used up, the car automatically transitions to functioning as a full hybrid, continuing to use both the engine and electric motor in tandem to maximise efficiency for the rest of the journey.
The Range Rover Sport offers two outputs of the PHEV models.
The P460e petrol plug-in hybrid combines a 3.0 litre petrol engine with a 38.2kWh battery for 460PS and 660Nm of torque.
The highlight is the estimated real world figure of up to 60 miles electric only range, more than enough for the school run, a trip to the supermarket, or most daily commutes, which means that your fuel economy is vastly improved compared to other engines in the range for a combined WLTP figure up to 400mpg. The idea of tackling long journeys on a single tank of fuel is a reality with the plug-in hybrid option, making it an excellent option on the Range Rover Sport.
The battery can be charged with both home charging points and rapid DC charging points up to 50kW. On a 7kW home charger it takes 5 hours to charge to 100% and increases to 15 hours if you're using a standard 2.3kW domestic plug. Although it takes much longer, if you're not able to have a wallbox charger or aren't ready to have one installed you can still charge at home.
Using a 50kW DC charging point gets you charge to 80% in just 40 minutes, ideal for when you're out and about and need to make sure your electric power is ready to be used.
The agile PHEV model has a 0-60mph time of 5.3 seconds, showcasing its performance, and CO2 emissions are heavily reduced when down to just 19g/km.
The P550e petrol plug-in hybrid also uses a 3.0 litre petrol engine with a 38.2kWh battery but offers more power at 550PS and 800Nm of torque. This gives you a faster 0-60mph time of 4.7 seconds, making you even quicker off the mark, and the electric motor keeps CO2 emissions low at up to 19g/km
Land Rover estimates a 1 mile difference in its real world EV range figure at 59 miles compared to 60 in the P460e but the additional power output lowers the combined WLTP figure to fall to up to 376mpg. However charging times for the electric battery are still advised as the same, meaning that you can charge to 80% in less than an hour using DC 50kW charge points.
