Titled the best large van at the 2019 business vans awards, the VW Transporter has set the benchmark for quality, practicality and running costs in the commercial vehicle market and Volkswagen have now made it even more environmentally friendly and economically attractive by introducing an all electric van version the VW e-Transporter.Due for release in 2020, the new e-Transporter is produced in collaboration with fellow German company ABT, an electric racing car specialist and it will be available for sale at Clark Commercials in Edinburgh, Dundee and Aberdeen.
This VW electric van will be available in both panel and passenger-van variants. Initially, panel van iterations will be produced as a long-wheelbase (LW) model only, which will offer payload capacities that range from 695kg to 1,186kg, depending on the whether a single or twin-battery pack is installed. Load volume, however, will remain at a consistent 6,700 litres.
One of two battery packs will be available for the new Volkswagen e-Transporter. Models installed with a 77.6kWH twin battery unit are set to deliver a noteworthy 250-mile range, while those with a 38.8kWh single battery are expected to achieve up to 134 miles – 41 miles more than the Mercedes eVito is currently capable of. Both powertrains produce 109bhp and 220Nm of torque, allowing the vehicle to go from 0-60mph in less than 13 seconds and achieve a top speed of 99mph.
Although charging times haven’t been finalised, the single-battery unit is anticipated to reach 80% capacity in around 50 minutes. When using a standard 7.2kW source, charging times will likely take just over five hours.
In addition to featuring a minimum four-speaker sound system with DAB radio, the e-Transporter electric van includes a five-inch touchscreen display, USB and AUX inputs and Bluetooth connectivity as standard. A host of driver aids and passive safety features are installed, too. For instance, Automatic Post-collision Braking System automatically applies braking pressure in the event of impact with another vehicle, thus helping to prevent additional collisions.
