The Range Rover Evoque is a subcompact luxury crossover SUV produced by Jaguar Land Rover under the Land Rover badge and has been in production since 2011 after first being unveiled in 2008 at the North American International Auto Show.
The second generation model has been in production since 2018, with a facelift in 2023, and reflects changes to Land Rover's design language that were launched in 2017 with the Range Rover Velar. The current generation also introduced the plug in hybrid model, allowing drivers a greener transmission and enhanced efficiency from their Evoque.
The Evoque has won a slew of awards in its lifetime, solidifying its success and favourable perception, which include Best Family SUV from What Car?, Best Compact SUV by GQ, and Best SUV/Crossover by Women's World Car of the Year Awards.
The Range Rover Evoque’s exterior is defined by a minimal, sophisticated design that gives it a highly distinctive, athletic profile. It's often described as a coupe-like compact SUV and this dynamic look is achieved through a dramatically falling, tapered roofline combined with a high, rising beltline and muscular shoulder running the length of the vehicle.
The design maintains a clean, seamless appearance with flush, deployable door handles, super-slim Pixel LED headlights, and minimal surface detailing, all complemented by signature Range Rover elements like the floating roof, a modern, unified grille and the iconic Range Rover badge.
Whilst the Evoque has had a few mid-life changes to equipment and its engine offerings, the styling of the model has remained mostly unchanged which makes it instantly recognisable as a member of the Range Rover family.
Inside, the Evoque's interior is defined by a reductive, refined luxury, making it easy to navigate and use whilst on the move, maintaining a calm and uncomplicated atmosphere by minimising physical controls. The cabin is upholstered in premium materials, such as soft leather or innovative non-leather alternatives like Eucalyptus or Kvadrat premium wool blends, with nice soft-touch surfaces and elegant chrome or gloss black accents throughout.
The focal point is the impressive, floating 11.4-inch curved glass touchscreen which runs the fast and intuitive Pivi Pro infotainment system, integrating all key functions including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto into one bright, high-resolution interface.
Further enhancing the driving experience is the configurable digital driver display, the multifunction steering wheel controls, ambient lighting, and available features like heated seats, a heated steering wheel, and a Meridian™ Sound System, all housed within an airy space often accentuated by an optional panoramic sunroof (standard on Autobiography models).
The driver and front passenger can enjoy 989mm headroom and 1016mm maximum legroom whilst rear seat passengers won't be cramped either with 973mm headroom and 864mm maximum legroom, meaning that even those over 6 foot should be able to relax comfortably in the Evoque.
The suspension is tuned to offer a plush, composed experience on long motorway journeys, expertly smoothing out most road imperfections, while the cabin benefits from excellent noise suppression for a tranquil environment and refined ride quality.
In terms of daily practicality, the 472-litre boot (expanding to 1,156 litres with the rear seats folded) is versatile, especially as the rear seats fold in a flexible 40:20:40 split for carrying a mix of passengers and longer items.
As you'd expect, the Range Rover Evoque benefits from Land Rover's off road capabilities and therefore has ground clearance of 212mm but a wading depth up to 530mm, ideal for those times you want to venture off the main roads and explore!
Across the Range Rover Evoque range there are currently 4 engine options: D165 diesel mild hybrid, D200 diesel mild hybrid, P160 petrol mild hybrid, and P270e petrol plug in hybrid. This gives you the flexibility to choose an option that suits your driving needs best, including diesel engines which many other car manufacturers have moved away from entirely.
Using an electric motor in tandem with the diesel engine delivers smoother acceleration, which is ideal when you're stuck in traffic, and there's no need to plug in to charge the battery. The regenerative braking system takes energy that is generated when the car slows down and converts it to optimise the battery range.
This energy is then redeployed to the engine for increased power and responsive acceleration but also increases overall fuel economy and fuel efficiency compared to diesel engines without the mild hybrid capability.
This two litre diesel engine has a nine speed automatic transmission and maximum power output of 163HP and 380Nm of torque. As well as this, it offers all wheel drive, a combined WLTP figure of up to 44mpg, and will take you from 0-60mph in 9.2 seconds.
The D200 mild hybrid engine uses the same technology as the smaller D165 engine to increase efficiency and provide more power but has a more powerful diesel engine counterpart.
Still a two litre diesel engine with nine speed automatic transmission and all wheel drive capability, the power is increased to 204HP with 430Nm of torque. You'll also manage 0-60mph in a reduced time of 7.9 seconds with a combined WLTP figure of up to 44mpg.
The petrol mild hybrid engine also uses Land Rover's mild hybrid technology and combines it with a 1.5 litre petrol engine. Again this will improve fuel efficiency and provide more power than a standard petrol engine.
For the P160 petrol mild hybrid engine, this provides 160hp and 260Nm of torque with front wheel drive only. Combined WLTP figures are lower than the mild hybrid diesel engines at up 36mpg but the 0-60mph time is equal at 9.7 seconds.
The petrol plugin hybrid model combines a 1.5 litre petrol engine with an 80kW electric motor to give you the best of both petrol and electric power.
Using electric mode gives you an electric range of up to 38.5 miles, ideal for short commutes or the school run, and can be charge to 100% in just over 2 hours using a 7kW wallbox charger. You can also use a 2.3kW domestic plug if you're not yet opting for a wallbox but this will take a little longer, estimated to be around 6 hours 42 minutes.
Combining the electric motor's power with petrol mode for the full plug in hybrid experience drastically improves the performance versus a standard petrol car. Combined WLTP figures can be as high as 201mpg and CO2 emissions drop to 31g/km.
The plug in hybrid model also offers all terrain abilities to give you confidence on all conditions. Intelligent all wheel drive and torque vectoring by braking are supported by other advanced Land Rover technologies such as all-terrain progress control and terrain response.

The Range Rover Evoque has a five star safety rating from Euro NCAP which comes from its 2019 test which was reviewed, confirmed and updated to include the PHEV variant in 2021.
This excellent rating comes from Land Rover's inclusion of innovative and advanced safety and driver assistance features which support you on each journey you take. Across the range these include adaptive cruise control, rear traffic monitor, speed limiter, driver condition monitoring, traffic sign recognition,
When Euro NCAP put the test car through its paces they noted, "The Evoque has an 'active' bonnet. Sensors in the bumper detect when a pedestrian has been struck and actuators raise the bonnet surface to provide greater clearance to hard structures in the engine compartment. In addition, an airbag is deployed to provide additional protection. Land Rover showed that the system worked for a variety of statures and across a range of speeds, so the vehicle was tested with the bonnet in the raised, deployed position. Test results were predominantly good or adequate."
Looking at additional features the added, "The AEB system performed well in tests of its functionality at highway speeds. The Evoque also has, as standard: a lane support system which helps the driver to avoid drifting out of lane and can also help in some, more critical situations; a seatbelt reminder for the front and rear seats; and a driver-set speed assistance system."
The Range Rover Evoque is an excellent example of Land Rover's outstanding design and commitment to modern luxury. With innovative driver assistance features, a strong offering of standard and optional equipment, and plenty of space to utilise, the Evoque is a great option and introduction to the Land Rover suite of models.
