Following the reveal of the fully electric EX30 small SUV, already an award-winning model in the Volvo line up, Volvo has unveiled the latest addition to its portfolio: the EM90, a fully-electric, premium MPV.
Designed “to be a comfortable living room on the move, and a car that provides you with room for life with your loved ones,” the EM90 meets the needs of more customers and the market demand for MPVs (multi-purpose vehicles) which has grown in recent years, especially in the Asian market.
“With the EM90, we're taking Volvo Cars' heritage and leadership in safety into the exciting new electric MPV segment,” said Jim Rowan, chief executive at Volvo Cars. “It allows us to tap new market demand we’ve not explored before and broadens the appeal of the Volvo brand to more people.”
The front-end design is recognisably Volvo, with the iconic Thor’s Hammer headlights providing the proud and confident face of a Volvo car. There’s also a brand-new headlight greeting; an illuminated logo that appears for the first time on a Volvo car that is inspired by skyscrapers and cutting-edge immersive art.
At the rear of the EM90, a lit-up wordmark and stylish rear light design make the model stand out and the iconic taillight signatures now extend upwards and downwards, again reflecting the skyline of modern cities, with the metal strip representing the core horizon line.
The EM90 will be available in four exterior colours which are warm tones inspired by the interplay between nature and light.
Inside, you’ll take advantage of top quality sound isolation and road noise cancellation technology whilst dual chamber air suspension and silent tyres will further smoothen the ride. This lets you enjoy the sound provided by the 21 Bowers & Wilkins speakers embedded around the cabin.
There’s also lounge seats for premium comfort, voice assistant integrated into the car systems to support you whilst you drive, a Snapdragon Cockpit Platform from Qualcomm Technologies is standard don the range, and 5G connectivity keeps you in touch with the world as you travel.
The Volvo EM90 will also offer bi-directional charging, this allows you to use the battery as a power bank to charge other electric cars or appliances and is going to be a key feature in electric cars going forward as things move towards a more circular economy.
Under the CLTC testing cycle the EM90 provides a range of 738km (458 miles) powered by a 116 kWh battery which has a 10%-80% charging time expected to fall just under 30 minutes. It can accelerate 0-100km/h in 8.3 second thanks to 200kW e-motor.
As well as offering abroad suite of advanced driver assistance systems, the EM90 will also come equipped with Volvo’s safe space technology which is designed to help protect everyone in and around the car. This brings 96 years of safety DNA and extensive knowledge based on real-world accident research into a new segment.
The Volvo EM90 will first be available in China, keep an eye out for updates for when it becomes available in the UK!
